Orthodox Christians for Life celebrates six years of impact through the National Orthodox Baby Shower!
This spring, Orthodox Christians across the country once again came together to support mothers, babies, and families in need through the 6th Annual National Orthodox Baby Shower. What began as a small initiative has grown into a nationwide movement of compassion, generosity, and service, uniting Orthodox parishes in a shared commitment to supporting women facing difficult pregnancies.
This year, nearly 100 Orthodox parishes representing 9 jurisdictions participated in the annual effort. Timed to coincide with the Feast of the Annunciation and the Lenten season, the National Orthodox Baby Shower gives Orthodox Christians a meaningful opportunity to live out the Church’s teachings on the sanctity of life practically and compassionately.
Each participating parish partners with a local nonprofit pregnancy resource center that provides free medical services, parenting support, counseling, material aid, and ongoing assistance for women experiencing crisis or unexpected pregnancies.
With guidance and support from Orthodox Christians for Life, the churches plan and organize donation drives– some even raising awareness of the drive through "baby shower" style events. Parishioners collect essential supplies for both mothers and babies, helping ensure that women choosing life will not have to face pregnancy or motherhood alone.
Through these partnerships, Orthodox parishes have been able to serve women and families in their own communities while building lasting relationships with organizations already doing life-affirming work on the front lines, as they counsel and minister to abortion-vulnerable women.
This year’s effort mobilized more than 2,550 individuals and resulted in a record-breaking number of donations. Contributions included:
- 76,900+ diapers
- 3,760+ packages of wipes
- $25,000+ in monetary gifts
- 5,270+ baby clothes and shoes
- 4,390+ additional baby items, including cribs, car seats, strollers, formula, and more
Since 2021, the National Orthodox Baby Shower has donated 204,300 diapers and over 37,055 other items.
While the numbers themselves are impressive, the true impact of the National Orthodox Baby Shower goes far beyond the data. For many women served by pregnancy resource centers, receiving practical support from the community is a powerful reminder that they are not alone.
Financial difficulties and lack of support are among the most-cited reasons that women seek abortions, and by helping to ease immediate financial stress through diapers and other material aid, Orthodox parishes have played a role in saving the lives of countless children. Donations such as diapers, formula, and baby clothes help relieve immediate financial stress.
The Baby Shower initiative also continues to strengthen connections between Orthodox parishes and local organizations providing direct services. From year to year, many churches have continued volunteering, donating, and supporting their partner organizations even after the annual event concludes. In this way, the National Orthodox Baby Shower has become more than a seasonal campaign—it has become a catalyst for ongoing local ministry and outreach.
“The Orthodox Church stands arm in arm with the pro-life movement as we seek to end the violence of abortion and support mothers in need,” said Emily Yocum, Executive Director of Orthodox Christians for Life.
“In a culture that is increasingly hostile to motherhood and family life, we must be the first to demonstrate Christianity’s reverence for human life in the womb and the sacred relationship between mother and child, as revealed so tenderly by our Savior and the Theotokos.”
For Orthodox Christians, the timing of the initiative during Great Lent and the Feast of the Annunciation carries special significance. The Annunciation commemorates the moment the Theotokos received the news that she would bear Christ, highlighting the sacredness of life in the womb and the beauty of motherhood within the Christian tradition. The Baby Shower initiative reflects that same spirit of love, sacrifice, and care for both mother and child.
As participation continues to grow each year, the National Orthodox Baby Shower serves as a visible witness to the Church’s commitment to defending life not only through words, but through concrete acts of mercy and compassion. By providing tangible support to women and families, Orthodox Christians are helping build a culture where both mothers and their children are welcomed, valued, and cared for.
